FAQ

Mutual Fund Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before starting your SIP or investing in mutual funds.

What is SIP and how does it work?+
SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly). It helps you invest with discipline, benefit from rupee-cost averaging — buying more units when prices are low — and build wealth through compounding. You can start from ₹500/month.
What are the best mutual funds to invest in 2026?+
Best funds depend on your risk profile and goal. For long-term wealth: Nifty 50 Index funds. For tax saving: ELSS funds. For conservative investors: hybrid or debt funds. Always invest based on your financial goal and risk tolerance — not just recent returns. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.
What is ELSS and how does it save tax?+
ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) is a type of equity mutual fund with a 3-year lock-in that qualifies for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per year. It combines equity returns with tax saving — and has the shortest lock-in of all 80C instruments (PPF has 15 years, NSC 5 years). Gains after 3 years are treated as LTCG (taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25L).
What is the difference between direct and regular mutual fund plans?+
Direct plans have a lower expense ratio as there is no distributor commission — giving slightly higher returns over long periods (can add up to 0.5–1.5% extra per year). Regular plans have a higher expense ratio as distributors earn commission. Angel One offers direct plans on its platform — choose direct for better long-term returns.
Can I stop or pause my SIP anytime?+
Yes. SIPs can be paused, modified or stopped anytime through the Angel One app — except ELSS (which has a 3-year lock-in on each installment). If you pause a SIP, existing units remain invested and continue to earn returns. You can resume anytime. There is no penalty for pausing or stopping.
Are mutual funds taxable? How much tax do I pay?+
For equity funds: Short-term capital gains (STCG) if held less than 12 months — taxed at 20%. Long-term capital gains (LTCG) if held more than 12 months — taxed at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh per year. For debt funds: gains are added to your income and taxed as per your slab. ELSS gains after 3 years are LTCG. Consult a tax advisor for your situation.
What is NAV in mutual funds?+
NAV (Net Asset Value) is the per-unit price of a mutual fund scheme, calculated at the end of each market day: NAV = (Total Assets – Liabilities) / Number of Outstanding Units. When you invest, you get units based on the day's NAV. When you redeem, you receive the current NAV × number of units held. A lower NAV doesn't mean the fund is cheaper — what matters is the fund's performance track record.
How do I redeem my mutual fund investment?+
Redemption is done digitally through the Angel One app — go to portfolio → select fund → click Redeem → enter amount or units. Money is credited to your registered bank account within T+3 business days for equity funds and T+1 for liquid/debt funds. ELSS funds have a 3-year lock-in per installment and cannot be redeemed before that.
