Bank Nifty (NIFTY BANK) is India's most actively traded index — both in futures and options. With massive daily volumes and explosive moves, Bank Nifty options offer some of the highest profit potential among all NSE instruments. However, they also carry significant risk due to high implied volatility, rapid theta decay, and sharp whipsaw moves. This guide covers the essential Bank Nifty trading setups that Indian option traders use.
Bank Nifty option buying strategy: (1) Trade only in the trend direction (above VWAP = buy CE, below = buy PE). (2) Buy at support/resistance + VWAP confluence. (3) Keep Stop Loss at 40–50% of premium paid. (4) Target 80–100% profit on position. (5) Never hold Bank Nifty options against the trend — time decay eats premium fast.
This is the most popular Bank Nifty intraday setup: If Bank Nifty opens above TC (CPR top) and above VWAP = strong bullish day — buy CE on dips to VWAP. If opens below BC (CPR bottom) and below VWAP = strong bearish = buy PE on pullbacks to VWAP. Mixed signals (between CPR bands) = wait for clarity before trading.
9:30–10:30 AM is the prime window for directional option trades after the opening volatility settles. 11:00 AM–12:30 PM is often slower. 1:30–2:30 PM sees a second active window. Avoid trading Bank Nifty options in the last 15 minutes before expiry (Thursday) due to extreme gamma risk.
Bank Nifty has weekly options expiring every Wednesday (moved from Thursday in 2024). As expiry approaches, time value (theta) decays rapidly — making far OTM options nearly worthless. ATM options see explosive moves on expiry day. Many retail traders prefer selling options on expiry morning and closing by noon.
For Bank Nifty option buying: At The Money (ATM) strikes give best delta exposure. Avoid far Out of The Money (OTM) options — they expire worthless 85%+ of the time. For intraday directional trades: ATM or one strike ITM. For high-conviction trend trades: 1–2 strikes OTM for higher leverage.
