CPR (Central Pivot Range) is one of the most popular indicators among Indian intraday traders — especially for Nifty and Bank Nifty options trading. CPR consists of three levels: Pivot (P), Top Central Pivot (TC), and Bottom Central Pivot (BC). A Narrow CPR (TC and BC very close together) signals a trending day ahead. A Wide CPR signals consolidation. CPR was popularized in India by trader Camarilla and is now a staple in most Indian trading setups.
Pivot (P) = (High + Low + Close) / 3. BC (Bottom Central Pivot) = (High + Low) / 2. TC (Top Central Pivot) = (P − BC) + P. All values are calculated using the previous day's data and remain fixed for the entire current trading session. Many trading platforms plot CPR automatically.
A Narrow CPR (TC and BC very close, within 0.3% of each other) signals that the market may trend strongly in one direction. Strategy: Wait for price to break above TC with volume for long entry, or break below BC for short entry. The narrower the CPR, the stronger the expected move.
A Wide CPR means TC and BC are far apart. On wide CPR days, the market tends to consolidate between CPR levels rather than trend. Strategy: Sell at TC, buy at BC — treat it as a range. Avoid breakout trades on wide CPR days as breakouts fail more often.
Popular combo: CPR + VWAP. If Nifty is above both VWAP and CPR = strong bullish = buy CE. Below both = strong bearish = buy PE. Mixed signals (above VWAP but below CPR, or vice versa) = wait for clarity. Adding CPR to VWAP gives better trend confirmation than either alone.
Yes — CPR works on any NSE/BSE stock. For mid-cap and small-cap stocks with predictable patterns, CPR + supertrend on 15-minute charts gives reliable intraday setups. For swing trading, weekly CPR (calculated from previous week's data) is popular.
