The Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is a type of moving average that gives greater weight to recent prices, making it more responsive to new information than a Simple Moving Average (SMA). EMA is the foundation of many popular trading strategies — from EMA crossovers to EMA + RSI confluence. The 9 EMA, 20 EMA, 50 EMA, and 200 EMA are the most widely tracked levels by Indian traders on NSE/BSE stocks.
SMA gives equal weight to all periods. EMA gives exponentially more weight to recent prices. Result: EMA reacts faster to price changes, reducing lag. EMA is preferred for short-term trading. SMA is smoother and better for identifying long-term trends. For intraday trading, EMA is almost universally preferred.
When 9 EMA crosses above 20 EMA = bullish (buy signal). When 9 EMA crosses below 20 EMA = bearish (sell signal). This short-term crossover is popular for intraday and swing traders. For confirmation, look for price to be above 50 EMA and volume to confirm the crossover.
Golden Cross: 50 EMA crosses above 200 EMA — strong bullish signal for positional trades. Death Cross: 50 EMA crosses below 200 EMA — strong bearish signal. These signals are rare but highly reliable for identifying major trend changes. Best used for selecting stocks for multi-week/month trades.
Simple rule: Only take long (buy) trades when price is above 200 EMA. Only take short (sell) trades when price is below 200 EMA. This filters out counter-trend trades and improves win rate significantly. The 200 EMA is the most widely watched moving average by institutional traders.
