Supertrend is a trend-following indicator based on ATR (Average True Range). It plots a line above or below price — when Supertrend flips from above to below price, it generates a buy signal (green). When it flips from below to above, it signals sell (red). Supertrend is extremely popular among Indian retail traders because of its simplicity — clear green/red signals without ambiguity. It works on all timeframes but is most reliable on daily charts.
Standard Supertrend settings: Period = 7, Multiplier = 3. These are the default and most widely used. For less noise: Period = 10, Multiplier = 3. For faster signals: Period = 5, Multiplier = 2. The (7,3) setting gives a good balance between signal frequency and reliability on NSE daily charts.
Buy signal: Supertrend turns green (flips from above to below price). Enter at the close or next candle open. Stop loss = Supertrend level (it acts as trailing stop). Sell signal: Supertrend turns red. Exit long and optionally short. The trailing stop feature of Supertrend is one of its biggest advantages.
Yes — Supertrend works on 5-minute, 15-minute, and hourly charts for intraday. However, signals are more frequent and less reliable than daily chart signals. For intraday, combine Supertrend with VWAP: only take Supertrend buy signals when price is above VWAP, and sell signals when below VWAP.
Powerful combination: Supertrend turns green (buy signal) AND RSI is below 60 (not overbought) = high-probability long trade. Supertrend turns red (sell signal) AND RSI is above 40 (not oversold) = high-probability short. Avoid Supertrend buys when RSI is above 80 or sells when RSI is below 20.
